Birthday Cake 2011: Toy Story Cake (Chocolate Peanut Butter and Vanilla Fudge)

This is the story of how mommy is a sucker...

All year long Isaiah has been talking about his Big Thunder Mountain Railroad cake, but the more and more I looked at pics I worried that making a good looking and good tasting cake would be very challenging. So he moved on to Palpatine's Shuttle. OK, this would be easier, but getting enough cake for my little socialite's birthday while making the wings structurally sound...hmmm...

Lime mousse cake with prickly pear gelee

Where have I been? Well, life gets very busy and I have found for my sanity I need to take a step back and focus on family and work first. But that doesn't mean I don't love to bake, and Daring Baker's challenges are a great way to do this. This month sounds like a big deal, but it is a lot easier than it looks. I was inspired by a recent find of Prickly Pear puree, so here is my contribution. Lime mousse cake with prickly pear gelee. if you have never had prickly pear, it is a wonderful delicate floral flavor.

The January 2011 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Astheroshe of the blog accro. She chose to challenge everyone to make a Biscuit Joconde Imprime to wrap around an Entremets dessert.

Gluten free burritos

I live in the San Francisco Bay  Area, and forgive me folks from Southern California, but we are known for a very specific kind of burrito - the Mission Burrito. My husband loves burritos. He loves them so much we served them at our wedding reception (mediocre ones but that is a different story). When he lived in France he would roll flour tortillas by hand, mixing with whatever close-enough ingredients he could find. So it is a bit of travesty that Aaron can't eat burritos.
